About John Barleycorn by Jack London
John Barleycorn is an autobiographical novel by Jack London dealing with his enjoyment of drinking and struggles with alcoholism. The title is taken from the British folksong "John Barleycorn". In this memoir, there are the themes of masculinity and male friendship. London discusses various life experiences he has had with alcohol, and at widely different stages in his life. Key stages are his late teen years when he earned money as a sailor and later in life when he was a wealthy, successful writer. Alcohol plays a big role in facilitating the themes listed above. The book is about the social facilitation of alcohol, but is also a cautionary tale about the addictive powers of alcohol and its deleterious effects on health. London describes the effects of alcohol along both optimistic and pessimistic lines, insisting at some points that it helped him in his developmental process towards becoming a man as he understood the idea and a writer and at other points that it limited in developing him in a healthy way. It remains an important and enduring milestone of his authorial career and of many of the writers of his period, as well as the milestone of many of the social historians of his period. This is an extremely difficult book to read; a true story with a tragic end. The book provides an incredible view from the inside out of a lifetime of pain and suffering, struggles and trials with alcoholism. For those who can see this evil spirit interwoven throughout the life of the author, seducing him into a darkness absent of God, hopelessly enthralled with this punishing and progressive disease. Great Book, It would be a marvelous guide for folks studying Drug and alcohol issues. I can image a graduate or other classroom being assigned reading the book and discussing it in detail. It can throw unusual light on the subject in relationship to the developing limited knowledge we have now.

The first time I read "John Barleycorn" was about 40 years ago. I read it then mainly out of curiosity and apprehension. I've come back to what I see as London's story within a story to identify with his lifelong experience with alcohol. To me London's book is not only a riveting good read, it's part diary, my diary.
As they say in AA, alcohol is cunning and baffling to those of us who have fallen under it's spell. It takes on different forms well beyond the liquid we see in a bottle.
Over time I came to believe in alcohol, to trust it and to love it. It was the what and who I turned to for the strengths, abilities, confidence, wholesome sense of self that I couldn't imagine having without it.
Even in sobriety, John Barleycorn is a part of me. Physically I may not desire his presence at all, but I must maintain a daily vigil against his constant pursuit of my mind and spirit. Jack London's "maggots?"
The Booksurge paperback is comfortable to hold and the print is bolder than what I've been used to seeing in paperbacks. The price is right,too.
Reading Jack London's "John Barleycorn" is like attending an AA meeting almost 50 years before they were instituted. London herein gives his story of life with alcohol, and it is much like those you hear in the rooms. Beginning with denial, then the drinking becomes a morning thing, then on the sly, the progression is classic alcoholism. Along the way, London includes enough autobiographical information that this is more than just a booze tale. Interestingly, London -- a devout socialist -- constantly harps on the need for prohibition in this country as a way to end the danger of alcoholism. And we all know how that worked out. I'm, an alcoholic, so I appreciated the book on one level. London is my favorite author, and this is one of his good efforts. It's not a depressing tale but one that is uplifting. Jack London writes about alcoholism in American literature, primarily his experiences about drinking in different surroundings, while travelling around the world.
This enjoyable book is filled with stories about a man who is more known for his writings than for the epics that he actually lived. This is a captivating book....with a very long "foreward", but which tells true stories that kept me fascinated. I'm not sure if there isa specific audience type for this book, but I think it would appeal more to men. It was definitely worth reading.
I enjoyed this account of London's formative years leading a rough and tumble existence. He describes his early years when he was alternately searching for a job, finding it, and then quitting it when the opportunity to enjoy the freedom of life on the Oakland water front, sailing the waters of the bay or drinking away the hours in a seaside saloon. Somehow the drinking is either in the forefront of his life, or it is reminisced upon. He succeeds in acquiring an education and developing his writing skills in between consuming alcohol at every chance. Eventually it catches up to him as it does just bout everyone, and even though he realizes, he can't avoid the train barreling down the tracks and eventually running him over. However, there is no denying that he lived an adventurous life, wrote about it producing some great stories, and lubricated everything with a generous doses of alcohol.
